Renting Bollywood DVDs

Bollywood films continue to gain popularity in the UK.

It’s the term used for the Hindi-language film industry in Mumbai – though it’s sometimes used incorrectly to mean all of Indian cinema or just trashy or popularist Indian films.

It’s true that much of the output of Bollywood – especially those parts that are popular here in the UK – could be described as both trashy and popularist.

The films are largely musicals. In fact, the music is sometimes released before the film to whet the audience’s appetite for the feature.

They also cross genres to make a blend that will appeal to as many different tastes as possible. This is sometimes called a Masala flick since masala is a blended spice.

However, Bollywood also produces a number of European-style art films and some more serious political and issue films in the movement known as parallel cinema.

This means that there are plenty of DVDs for the UK user to watch and sub-genres to explore.

So how can you rent Bollywood DVDs? Local DVD rental shops tend not to keep a large collection unless there’s a large Indian immigrant population in the area.

Bollywood films are popular amongst the Indian Diaspora. It’s estimated that 12% of the revenue generated by a mainstream Bollywood film comes from outside of the country.

If you don’t have a suitable DVD rental shop in your area, though, that leaves dvd rental by post.

Using this method it’s simple to find Bollywood films to your taste since you can search by genre or actor.

You’ll also be able to find films based on the ‘Clan’ or broad family type group that has produced it.

Bollywood is well known for being very cliquey. People who are relatives of film-industry insiders have an advantage when it comes to getting coveted roles in films or being part of a film’s crew and this has led to a few very recognisable family groups.

For example, the Chopra-Johar family is known as the most powerful family in Bollywood if not the entire the Indian Film Industry and they have produced some of the country’s biggest blockbusters.

Unfortunately, though, a lot of Bollywood films aren’t yet available for blu ray rental so that’s a shame for people who are fans of high definition viewing.

Big sites such as Lovefilm tend to have a lot of Bollywood films to rent.

More specialised sites such as Cinema Paradiso might be better for more specialised or hard to find Bollywood DVDs
